    Chennai 151/4

That's a good score on this pitch, so the Stags are up against it. However the wicket does seem to have calmed down a fraction so it's not impossible. I wouldn't write anyone off just yet... We're back in a moment.

  •

    Over 20 Milne 2-1-1-1-4-2

151-4 - Morkel smashes a drive to deep cover and comes back for a tight second run, but it's a pretty good over from Milne as he finds a length that's difficult to get underneath. Three singles are the result, but then Milne drops short and Badrinath upper cuts him over backward point for four to bring up his half-century (41 balls, 4x4s, 2x6s). A couple from the final delivery take Chennai to 151.

  •

    Over 19 Mason 1-1lb-6-1b-1b-1

140-4 - Morkel mistimes a low full toss to long-on and only gets a single, but then changes his bat and shows his power as he clears long-off once he's back on strike. The batsmen run a couple of byes after swinging and missing, before Morkel bludgeons the final ball but only gets a single to deep midwicket.

  •

    Over 18 McClenaghan 1-1-4-0-6-1

129-4 - A top edge from Morkel flies over the vacant slip cordon for four, and then he gets one in the slot and deposits it over wide long-on for six - an area of the ground where he generally hits his maximums. Central Districts desperately need wickets in the dying stages to keep the runs down.

  •

    Over 17 Bracewell 4-W-1-1-0-1

116-4 - WICKET! Anirudha pillages one more boundary down the ground, but then perishes as wicketkeeper Griggs snaffles an outside edge. That was an excellent innings, given the state of Chennai when he came in, and that partnership of 73 from 43 balls has turned the match. Albie Morkel is the new man in, much to the crowd's delight, and he manages a couple of singles.

  •

    Over 16 Noema-Barnett 1-4-1-1-1-0

109-3 - Anirudha continues his onslaught, backing away and then coming forward to blast a full toss wide of long-off for four. That's the only boundary though as the medium-pacer with a long name tightens up.

  •

    Over 15 Mason 2-2-6-4-0-0

101-3 - Mason returns, and Anirudha slices the first two balls over backward point but is denied boundaries by superb fielding on both occasions. However no fielding is required from the next ball as he smashes it over cover for six. Then he takes on the short ball, and top edges a hook shot for a one-bounce four, and the ball ends up in the Stags bus shelter. This is turning into an impressive partnership.

  •

    Over 14 Bracewell 1-6-4-1-0-1

87-3 - Bracewell starts with a couple of short ones, but the second is pulled brilliantly over wide midwicket for six by Badrinath. Then the yorker is fired in, but Badrinath jams his bat down and squirts it away fine enough to beat third man. Thirteen from the over, and Chennai are looking good for 130 or 140, which should be competitive on this pitch, especially given their bowling line-up.

  •

    Over 13 Worker 1-1-1-0-1-1

74-3 - Worker has changed ends, and now he's coming over the wicket to dart the ball in nice and close to the batsmen. They try and get inside the line to whip to leg, but find it difficult to find gaps to get more than singles.

  •

    Over 12 Noema-Barnett 0-1-1-0-4-1

69-3 - Kieran Noema-Barnett replaces Worker, and he'll bowl some classic Kiwi dibbly dobblies. He's pretty difficult to get away, but then Anirudha gives himself some room and manages to get the ball over short third man for four. The Chennai run rate is still below six, but things are looking up.

  •

    Over 11 McClenaghan 1-1-4-0-6-2

62-3 - Good batting from Badrinath, as he backs away to give himself room and then pummels a length ball through cover for four. Then he backs away again and throws his bat at a short one and just clears the fielder on the cover-point boundary. McClenaghan comes around the wicket, but is pushed through a gap at backward point for a couple more. That's injected some life into the Chennai innings.

  •

    Over 10 Worker 0-1-0-0-1-4

48-3 - Change of pace now as left-arm spinner George Worker comes on to bowl. He's not giving the ball much flight, and is looking to fire it into the right-handers from around the wicket and cramp them for room. Dropped! Worker drops short with his final delivery, and it's put down at square leg as the fielder runs around to his right. He was on the move and it hit was hit quite hard, but he got two hands to that and ends up conceding four. Anirudha's the man to profit.

  •

    Over 9 Bracewell W-0-0-1-wd-0-0

42-3 - WICKET! Huge credit to the Stags here, because they've kept a slip in as they continue to attack, and Sinclair has taken a ripper. Bracewell got one to take off and find the edge of Vijay's bat, and the slip fieldsman took the catch high above his head. Chennai send in Srikkanth Anirudha rather than one of their big guns, and I suspect Dhoni would rather come in a bit later once things have perhaps settled down a bit. Anirudha gets off the mark with a quick single, but a wide is the only other run in the over.

  •

    Over 8 McClenaghan 1-1-1lb-1-1-1

40-2 - The Chennai batsmen are warming to the task now, and look for the quick singles in the absence of boundaries. Both are solid batsmen technically so they've actually been the best pair for the job. They'll be looking to set the platform for the likes of Morkel and Dhoni to launch later.

  •

    Over 7 Bracewell 2-0-0-1-1-2

34-2 - Doug Bracewell into the attack now, and Vijay flicks one from outside off stump through midwicket for a couple. Bracewell gets a bit straight to allow both batsmen to flick singles through square leg, and then Vijay flicks off his hips but is denied a boundary by some brilliant fielding at fine leg.

  •

    Over 6 Milne 1-0-1-1-2-wd-1

28-2 - Nearly another chance for Diamanti, but this time a guide from Badrinath flies just to his left as he sticks out a hand. Vijay profts from a bizarre misfield to grab a couple through midwicket, but the boundaries are refusing to come for Chennai here. These two seem content to see off the tough spell for the moment and hope batting gets easier.

  •

    Over 5 McClenaghan 1lb-0-1-0-1-0

21-2 - Dropped! But there won't be much blame on Diamanti here, because Badrinath murdered a cut shot to gully, where the fielder did well just to get two hands and stop a certain boundary. It's a good first over from the promising youngster Mitchel McClenaghan, a left-armer with plenty of pace.

  •

    Over 4 Milne 0-0-1-1-0-4

18-2 - It's seriously tough going out there for the batsmen, with the ball just sticking in the pitch a little bit. Vijay mistimes an attempted hack over extra cover and just gets it over the infield, fortunate to see it drop safely. Then he finally finds the boundary from the final delivery, but it's through another slice of luck as he gets an edge over the slips.

  •

    Over 3 Mason 0-0-4-1-0-1

12-2 - There's no doubt who the crowd are supporting, as a big roar goes round as Badrinath flicks one off his pads and gets it away fine enough to find the boundary. But there's still some lateral movement for Mason, so this is really encouraging stuff for the Stags.

  •

    Over 2 Milne 4-0-0-W-1-0

6-2 - WICKET! Super start for the Stags, as Adam Milne removes Suresh Raina with a snorter! He'd started badly with a legside delivery that was flicked away for four, but then discovered how much bounce he could get. From there on he troubled Raina, before squaring him up with one that jagged away and took off. Brendan Diamanti takes the catch at second slip.

  •

    Over 1 Mason 0-0-0-0-1-W

1-1 - There was some rain overnight so there might be something in this pitch, and the Stags have gone in with four seamers. The most experienced of those gets them underway with Michael Mason charging in to Murali Vijay, and his second ball catches the edge but doesn't carry to slip. WICKET! First-ball duck for Matthew Hayden! He tried to pull but the ball bounced a bit more than he expected, and the top edge is taken at deep backward square leg. Great start for the Stags.

    Just about ready

The umpires are making their way out to the middle. Today's game is apparently sold out, but there are a few latecomers still filtering into the ground.

    Team news

Matthew Hayden, Doug Bollinger, Muttiah Muralitharan and Albie Morkel are Chennai's four overseas players in a hugely talented side. There are five Black Caps in the Central Districts side, but none of them are exactly top Kiwi players.

  •

    Toss

News from the middle is that Chennai have won the toss and elected to bat first. Stags skipper Jamie How says he would have bowled anyway so it hardly matters.

    Greetings

We've just seen the Warriors dispatch Wayamba with impressive efficiency, and now we wheel across to Durban for the second match of the day. New Zealand side Central Districts hare up against it as they take on the IPL champions Chennai Super Kings.
