James DeGale was delighted to put on a show for his hometown fans after beating Brandon Gonzales in an IBF super-middleweight final eliminator.

The 2008 Olympic champion paved the way for a possible shot at Carl Froch with a fourth-round stoppage of the unbeaten American at Wembley.

DeGale was impressive throughout and scored a heavy knockdown before the referee stepped in to halt the bout, signalling a crucial win in a final eliminator for Froch's IBF title.

"Exactly what I wanted to do tonight is put on a performance in front of 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium at my homecoming," DeGale told Sky Sports Box Office.

"It was fantastic, the atmosphere was brilliant and thank you to all the fans."

Gonzales did not appear to be completely out on his feet when the contest was stopped, but DeGale believed his opponent was badly hurt.

He added: "I'm going to have to watch it back but I was hitting him with some good, clean shots and he was hurt."

With a domestic superfight now awaiting him, DeGale feels he is more than ready to make the step up to the world stage.

"(I'm) 100 per cent (ready). In the last couple of fights I was injured, going in the ring unhappy," he said.

"That was a good fighter, Brandon Gonzales was an unbeaten American, (who was) confident and came to win. I'm just happy, that was a final eliminator, the winner of Froch and Groves - I'm ready."
