All smiles

David Haye told Ringside he was pleased to put smiles back on the faces of his fans by stopping Dereck Chisora.

The former heavyweight world champion returned to the ring in controversial circumstances last weekend.

Fighting with a Luxembourg Boxing Board of Control licence Haye bounced back from his defeat to Wladimir Klitschko by stopping his fellow Brit in just five rounds.

It was a win which repaid the debt he owed to his fans after a disappointing display against Klitschko, said Haye.

"The whole plan for this fight was to bring back the old Hayemaker - the cruiserweight Hayemaker," he said. "The heavyweight Hayemaker had some entertaining fights against John Ruiz and Monty Barrett, but a lot of people remember the fight against Wladimir Klitschko where I believe I under performed and a lot of people who went over to Germany felt short changed.

"So I wanted to give them their money back and give people a fight they would be happy about. And every single person in that arena was buzzing."

Turmoil

There had been plenty of turmoil between the pair before the bout and Haye said he used that to his advantage come fight night.

"Dereck did exactly what we hoped he'd do and that was come at me like a steam train," he said. "We knew he'd just keep on coming so we had to wait for him to get desperate and make mistakes.

"The combination I put him down with, when I stepped across to my left and sprang back in from a south paw position with a left cross, was something we practiced time and time again in training. As soon as that shot landed I didn't think he'd get back up. He did - and credit to him - but the referee did the right thing in stopping him the second time he went down."

Focused

And Haye said he wasn't fazed by the pre-fight controversy regarding the British Boxing Board of Control refusing to stage the fight.

"I understand their viewpoint from and the stance they took," he said. "But the way I saw it was: I'm a professional athlete, I'm going to get into a boxing ring and fight Dereck Chisora. If I focused any energy on the paperwork that went on with the fight that would mean I wasn't focusing fully on Chisora. I passed all that over to Adam Booth and focused on the fight."

And now Haye is hoping Wladimir's elder brother Vitali will give him another shot at a world title.

"Vitali has said publicly he wants to fight me and says he can knock me out," said Haye. "I believe, with his aggressive style, it will make for a fantastic spectacle. And I also believe I can not only beat him but knock him out! The people of the world need to see this heavyweight fight."
