Steve Brown told Sky Sports News that without financial worry, he can now put his full focus on competing.

The GB wheelchair rugby captain will benefit from Sky Sports Scholarships, eliminating the need for Brown to fund competition entry fees, equipment and travel himself.

And the 30-year-old, whose £10,000 wheelchair must be replaced every 18 months, admits having this financial security is fundamental in a sport with such high costs.

Brown said: "Being part of this is huge. The biggest thing that comes with financial worries is the worry itself and now with the Sky Sports scholarships we can put more focus into competing as opposed to how we're going to afford to compete.

Steve Brown Quotes of the week

"The chair itself is expensive, the equipment we use is expensive, and travelling up and down the country, Europe and internationally, all comes at a price.

"Knowing that a big percentage of that is covered through the Sky Sports sponsorships and scholarships is a huge thing for me."

Success

Brown - who narrowly missed out on selection for the Beijing Paralympics in 2008 - will have physiotherapy and sports science treatments provided, enabling the Kent Crusaders player to focus on his team's preparations and success.

Brown added: "We're really moving in the right direction. We've just come back from the Europeans with a silver medal, a hard fought silver medal, as it was a very close final. The team as a whole have done very well to get there. And it puts us in the running now for a medal in future competitions."
