Josh Warrington came out on top in his featherweight clash with Dennis Tubieron in Leeds and said he did what he needed to do

Josh Warrington took another step towards a world title shot with a dominant points win over Dennis Tubieron.

The Leeds man claimed a unanimous decision victory in a WBC featherweight world title eliminator, earning scores of 119-109, 119-110 and 119-109 with his relentless work-rate at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on Saturday night.

But there are lingering concerns about Warrington's punch power after he failed to halt the outgunned Filipino during 12 punishing rounds.

Hollywood star Vinnie Jones walked Warrington to the ring, with the hometown crowd creating a cacophony of noise, and the local favourite came out firing in the first round.

Lee Selby believes he is still way ahead of Josh Warrington but admits it won’t be long before he fights him

He swiftly bullied his opponent to the ropes, sinking in his trademark body shots, and shrugged off a left hand from Tubieron in the second.

Rattling out a right-left, Warrington sent his foe tottering backwards in the third, and searched for an early finish with a stream of spiteful punches.

But Tubieron stood and traded in the fourth, exchanging hooks at close quarters, and would draw an angry reaction from the hometown man, who tossed him through the ropes.

Not even a ticking off by referee Victor Loughlin could quell Warrington’s burning desire for battle and he went to work again in the fifth as another sustained attack left Tubieron gasping for air.

But the European champion could not find a telling punch to end the contest, even after a jolting uppercut in the seventh.

Tubieron, aptly nicknamed the Scorpion, would scuttle away from his attacker, striking back with the occasional punch to prevent the intervention of Loughlin.

Into the last round, Warrington still tried to test Tubieron's resistance with thudding body shots, but had to settle for a wide points win.
