Trainer Joe Gallagher insists Scott Quigg needs an answer about the Carl Frampton fight within the next two weeks.
Talks have been held about a possible world title unification fight between Quigg and Frampton this year, but the eagerly awaited super-bantamweight battle is yet to be agreed.
Gallagher has already begun preparations with his fighter Quigg, the WBA champion, but might have to think about other possible opponents if a deal cannot be struck with IBF king Frampton soon.
We’re already training for the Carl Frampton fight, but if it’s not going to be, we need to know in the next couple of weeks.
“I want Scott Quigg to fight the end of May, beginning of June,” Gallagher told Sky Sports.
“He hasn’t fought since November. He’s ready to go then and I don’t want to wait for the beginning of next season for him to fight.
“We all want it to be the Carl Frampton fight. We’re already training for the Carl Frampton fight, but if it’s not going to be, we need to know in the next couple of weeks, because we have to start preparing against another quality opponent in the next 10 or 12 weeks.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn admits negotiations are reaching a crucial period as he attempts to stage another major domestic clash.
“I think if there’s going to be a big summer fight we have to move quickly,” Hearn said. “Talks are kind of ongoing, frustrating.
“They definitely want the fight, but we have to go through the right channels.
“I think two weeks is a realistic time frame. What Joe Gallagher is referring to is not signing in two weeks, or else.
“It’s from a training perspective, we want to make sure that within two weeks we know who our opponent is, so we can work on that opponent for the summer.”
