Change of camp not the best option ahead of crossroads fight

Matt Macklin is back in action, Bernard Hopkins says he wants one more fight and some say Wladimir Klitschko has a live opponent this weekend. Jamie Moore addresses the big issues...

Fight Night

Your mate Matt Macklin is back in action, as are you .. how come you are not back in his corner?

Jamie says: I told him as soon as I was back in the gym that he was more than welcome to come back. The only reason he hasn't is because it's only been five weeks since the last fight and he didn't want to switch camps ahead of such an important fight. And I've said to Matt, no matter what you do or whoever you train with, my best interests are you. I just want to see you win a world title, so do whatever you want to do. I do want to work with him in the future because I am sure we can do some good things but I will be behind him 100 per cent whatever happens.

In that case how big a risk does Jorge Sebastian Heiland pose? What do you know about him?

Jamie says: Well this is the guy we were going to fight, when what happened to me happened. I hadn't really come across him but Eddie Hearn had a look, did some research and found he is high in the ratings. I checked him out and he is a good fighter. He's a southpaw with a couple of decent wins on his card and while Matt has to win, this a risk worth taking. Style-wise Heiland is very capable; he throws his punches in bunches well, but when I was studying him I felt he does leave his chin out to dry. He leaves it exposed when he's throwing all those shots, so Matt can counter and I think he will get him out of there. He's a hard enough puncher, so I can see hin finishing it in the seventh or eighth.

You expect the win but let's fear the worst... what happens if Macklin loses?

Jamie says: If this does go wrong it is going to be very, very difficult for him to rebuild. He has already had some big setbacks in the past and Matt has admitted this is his last chance, certainly at world level. There would still be big fights out there for him I'm sure, but as far as his ambitions of winning that world title, losing to Heiland would be the end of the line. I've got to say though, he is good enough to go all the way. He proved that against Felix Sturm - he was definitely hard done by and should've got the decision. That sort of set him on a run of bad luck; he's had injuries, he gave a great account of himself in defeat against Sergio Martinez, the way the Daniel Geale fight fell through at the last minute, not getting the rematch with Sturm. He needs some good luck, that's for sure. Especially now because this is the last-chance saloon and he is back in Dublin for the first time in ages.

One man who doesn't touch a drop but seems to live in the last chance saloon is Bernard Hopkins? He says one more chance...

Image: Bernard Hopkins: lost his punch but wants one more fight

Jamie says: No. Just no. I don't want to see him fight again. All those crafty old moves, where he is fast on his feet and hard to hit, was still there but his punch output was non-existent - and that is the last thing he needs. Yes, he did well to survive the full 12 rounds against someone as good as Sergey Kovalev but I do think the referee should've stopped it in the last round. He only let it go on because it is Bernard Hopkins we are talking about. But it was a moral victory and let's give him credit for that. Remember that as good as he was, even in his prime Hopkins didn't bring excitement to the table, did he? I just want to see him walk away. No matter who he is lining up.

Another champion approaching the end of his career is Wladimir Klitschko. Is this weekend's opponent Kubrat Pulev a real 'live' opponent who can surprise us all?

Wladimir Klitschko
Image: Wladimir Klitschko: no chances

Jamie says: I've seen a couple of his fights and he looks decent but he was against very limited opposition. Look at his recent record and you're talking Tony Thompson, and as much as we all like him, Michael Sprott, so he has had his career a little padded. We know Wladimir is reluctant to take chances when it comes to picking opponents and he is not going to take any risks against Pulev, which will again make him look better than he actually is. Pulev might well cause a few problems early on due to Klitschko's caution and his own ambition, but I don't think he stands a chance. That Klitschko jab is a weapon in itself...
