Floyd Mayweather: Set to face Marcos Maidana again in September
Ashley Theophane expects to link-up with Floyd Mayweather’s promotional company in two weeks time as they prepare for the American’s rematch with Marcos Maidana.
Mayweather revealed this week he is set to face the Argentine again on September 13 and Theophane, who is promoted by the boxing superstar, is likely to appear on the undercard.
Plans for a Mayweather fight are usually a closely guarded secret, but the Londoner was told to return to Las Vegas by fellow fighter Ishe Smith, another member of Floyd’s ‘Money Team’.
"I was speaking to Ishe Smith just yesterday about it. He just said the rematch is going to happen, but we don’t know where yet. He just said to hurry up and get back to Vegas."
Theophane, a recent guest pundit on the Toe 2 Toe podcast, said: “I was speaking to Ishe Smith just yesterday about it. He just said the rematch is going to happen, but we don’t know where yet. He just said to hurry up and get back to Vegas.
“I’ll be back in camp in two weeks time so I’m just staying in shape while I’m in London and I’ll be back there soon.”
The 37-year-old multi-weight champion was given a stern test by Maidana, withstanding an early onslaught from ‘El Chino’ before taking a majority decision victory in May.
Maidana landed more punches on Mayweather than any other fighter and one judge scored it a 114-114 draw, but Theophane expects his boss to win in dominant fashion when they meet again.
“I thought he won by four rounds easy so I was kind of shocked by the response that it was a close fight," said the light-welterweight.
“The only thing that I saw was that Maidana was rugged and the referee he didn’t warn him, he didn’t take off no points.
“I think Maidana did what he does, always puts up a great fight, and I just thought the longer the rounds went on that Floyd just started to outbox him.
"I think from the get-go he will outbox him straight away. I think it will be the same type of a fight."
Theophane claimed victory on the same bill, pounding Angino Perez to a halt in the fourth round, and should return to action on the September card.
The former British champion said: “I’ve been on his last two cards, so I’m very sure that I’ll be on the next one.
“I would love to fight a ranked opponent, a former world champ, and then hopefully get one of the world champions at the end of the year. That is my goal.”
