Leo Santa Cruz retained his WBC super-bantamweight title with a one-sided victory over Cristian Mijares in Las Vegas.

The 25-year-old Mexican is one of the most exciting boxers in the sport at present and he threw more than 1000 punches against his over-matched rival.

Mijares, now 49-8-2, is a former two-time super-flyweight champion and multiple title contender but had little to show for his efforts against the young champion.

After dominating the opening rounds Santa Cruz was cut after a clash of heads in the fourth and although it gave the challenger heart he was hurt to the body later in the session.

Santa Cruz continued to break his opponent down but although he threw everything at the veteran Mijares refused to quit, and his increasingly defensive tactics saw him through to the final bell.

However, scores of 120-108 (twice) and 119-109 told the full story.

"Mijares is a great boxer," said Santa Cruz, now 27-0. "I came to do what I had to do to win. We practised everything to put on a great fight."

Santa Cruz is the target of Belfast favourite Carl Frampton, who takes on veteran Hugo Fidel Cazares in a final eliminator next month.
