Miguel Cotto: Poised for his first fight at middleweight
The proposed fight between Sergio Martinez and Miguel Cotto has taken a step closer after they agreed on the billing for the show.
The two veterans have reportedly been in negotiations for a June 7 clash at New York's Madison Square Garden for some time, with minor details delaying an official announcement.
The reigning WBC middleweight champion is apparently happy for the show to be promoted as 'Cotto-Martinez', with a final agreement expected soon.
It is likely to be a swansong for 'Maravilla', who will be 39 next month. The Argentine great has been troubled by numerous injuries in recent years, during which time he has defeated British trio Darren Barker, Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray.
Cotto, 33, is widely considered to be past his prime following a stellar career that has seen him collect world titles in three divisions.
But he returned from losses to Floyd Mayweather and Austin Trout to impressively brush aside Delvin Rodriguez last October after linking up with legendary trainer Freddie Roach.
However, a fight against Martinez would be his first at middleweight.
