Rocky Fielding is hoping to use the Commonwealth title as a stepping stone to securing him a world title shot in the future.

However, the unbeaten super middleweight must first beat Mohammed Akrong at Liverpool's Olympia on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Akrong has won 19 of his 24 fights, 15 by knockout, and suffered five defeats in a career which has seen him fight outside of Africa only once when he was stopped in five rounds by Mexican world title challenger Marco Antonio Rubio in 2011.

Fielding has been handed a shot at the belt after George Groves vacated last month in order for a crack at Carl Froch's IBF and WBA world titles.

"The Commonwealth is a route George Groves has gone down and now he is fighting for the world title," 2011 Prizefighter champion Fielding told the Liverpool Echo.

"Getting hold of that belt and then getting a couple of good defences in will really help me improve. It will help me move up the ladder as well."

The 26-year-old was due to defend his English strap against Tony Dodson but his fellow Liverpudlian was forced to pull out with an injury.

Fielding relinquished the title in order to face Ghanaian Akrong but would still like to fight Dodson in the future.

"The Dodson fight would've been a good fight and a good name on my record," added Fielding.

"He is a good fighter and a former British champion but him pulling out has actually done me a favour because I'm now fighting for the Commonwealth.

"If I can win on September 21 then I would not mind defending against Dodson later in the year.

"It was disappointing that Tony had to postpone our fight but I don't want to face a half fit Tony Dodson. I want him to be fully ready."

You can watch Rocky Fielding on Saturday night on Sky Sports 2 along with Derry Mathews v Curtis Woodhouse and Liam Smith v Erick Ochieng.
