Saul Alvarez: He'll need to be smart to beat Mayweather

Sky Bet

Saul Alvarez says he will have to fight 'smart' if he is to become the first man to defeat Floyd Mayweather.

'Canelo' is used to gradually breaking his opponents down and he will need to use similar educated pressure if he is to trouble the pound-for-pound world No 1.

However, the 23-year-old also knows he may need to adapt his gameplan against the wily American.

"When you fight Floyd you have to be ready for every aspect of a fight," said the young Mexican. "You have to be able to adjust mentally as well as physically. I have to be very, very smart.

"We've prepared like never before. Floyd is a fighter who throws five punches a round and he lands them - that's why he wins rounds. But we're prepared for that - we're prepared for everything."
