Frankie Gavin: Is one win away from securing Lonsdale belt

Frankie Gavin hopes to secure the Lonsdale belt when he makes his third defence as British welterweight champion against David Barnes on September 21st.

Gavin is one win away from earning a copy of the treasured British belt to keep and his Commonwealth title will also be on the line against Barnes at the Copper Box Arena in London.

The Birmingham fighter dismantled Denton Vassell in June, breaking his opponent's jaw in the seventh round to force a stoppage after a dazzling display of his ring skills

Victory will move Gavin closer to the division's big names, but he is refusing to look past the skilful Barnes, who has held the British belt at light-welterweight and welterweight.

"This is a special night for me at the Copper Box Arena when my dream to own the Lonsdale belt will come true," said Gavin.

"I'm looking forward to this fight more than any other in my career, Barnes is a tough, tough, kid, he was a British champion at two-weights and deserves respect, but there is no way he's going to beat me on the night, no way at all.

"I took Vassell, who was an undefeated champion, apart in seven rounds and he was supposed to give me my hardest fight, so just imagine what I'm going to do to Barnes.

"I'm taking nothing for granted though, I'm going to torture myself in training and make sure that I'm the fittest, fastest and strongest I've ever been and that everyone is going to see something very special from me on the night."
