Frankie Gavin (r) Stopped Denton Vassell in impressive fashion
Frankie Gavin sent out a warning to his British welterweight rivals with a seventh-round stoppage win over Denton Vassell.
The former amateur star proved a class above Vassell in this battle of unbeaten fighters and the Mancunian was left with a suspected broken jaw as Gavin ruined his record in ruthless fashion.
Gavin added the Commonwealth belt to his British strap and his stop-start career is finally taking off in a domestic division that includes the likes of Lee Purdy and Kell Brook.
A blistering start from the Birmingham fighter forced Vassell onto the back foot and he struggled to avoid his opponent's precise punches.
Gavin continued to pick apart Vassell's defences, but he briefly fought back in the fifth, bullying his southpaw foe to the ropes.
Any hopes of a Vassell onslaught were halted by Gavin's lightning left hand and he piled on the punishment before a big shot left the Lancashire man with a badly damaged jaw.
A doctor inspected the injury at the end of the round and referee Howard Foster mercifully stopped the fight.
On the undercard, Paul Butler defended his Commonwealth super-flyweight title with a fourth-round stoppage of late stand-in Najah Ali.
