GB boxer Sam Maxwell moved within one more win of a guaranteed medal at the European Amateur Championships in Minsk on Monday.

The 24-year-old Liverpool light-welterweight produced a polished performance to see-off Italy's former Olympic and world bronze medallist Vincenzo Mangiacapre via a split decision after three tight rounds.

But there was disappointment for Edinburgh's London Olympian Josh Taylor who bowed out at the same weight following a tight 2-1 defeat to Armen Zakaryan of Armenia.

There was agony for Ireland's reigning European champion Joe Ward who suffered a dislocated kneecap with 20 seconds remaining in his light-heavyweight bout with Poland's Mateusz Tryc.

The Moate southpaw was in control of the bout and heading for victory before the injury, which left him unable to continue.

Another Irish reigning champion, light-welterweight Ray Moylette, went out on a unanimous verdict to Huseyin Karslioglu of Turkey.
