George Groves staked his claim for world title shot with an explosive knockout win over Noe Gonzalez at the 02 Arena in London.

Groves hopes to face one of the super-middleweight champions this year and he sent out a chilling warning to his rivals after ruthlessly dismantling Gonzalez inside five rounds.

Gonzalez is a former world title challenger, but he could not contend with the British fighter's classy ring skills and Groves displayed his full repertoire before ending the bout with a big right hand.

Groves quickly found the range with his swift jab in the opener and a right hand soon ripped through Gonzalez's defences.

The Argentinian marched forward with purpose but struggled to land a clean punch on Groves, who boxed neatly off the back foot.

Crisp combination

Groves stepped up his attack in the second as a crisp combination sent Gonzalez into reverse, although he briefly stopped the assault with a left hand.

The Londoner looked a league above his foe, unloading hurtful hooks before slipping cleverly out of range.

George Groves remains set to fight for the world title after stopping Noe Gonzalez Alcoba in the fifth round at the O2 Arena.

Groves rocked Gonzalez's head back with ramrod jabs in the third and the one-way traffic continued as a right hand crashed into his opponent's ribs.

Gonzalez walked into an uppercut at the start of the fourth, but he finally got Groves' attention with a wild flurry at the end of the round.

The South American's brief success drew a dramatic response from Groves as he ended the fight in the fifth when a jab was followed by a destructive right hand.

Gonzalez collapsed face first onto the canvas, robbed of his senses, and referee Terry O'Connor waved it off after he climbed unsteadily to his feet.
