Eddie Hearn and Ricky Burns: Big plans, but Jose Gonzalez comes first

Ricky Burns has been warned to expect a hungry opponent with little to lose when he defends his world title on Saturday.

Unbeaten Puerto Rican Jose Gonzalez is the mandatory challenger for Burns' WBO lightweight belt in the Scot's first contest since signing for Eddie Hearn's Matchroom stable.

Hearn has big plans for Burns, including the possibility of revisiting a unification fight with IBF champion Miguel Vazquez, the Mexican who withdraw from a planned April meeting because of a stomach infection.

"He is undefeated and he believes he can win this fight, that's why he is here and he poses a real threat."

But the promoter has warned his new signing Saturday's outing - in front of his home crowd in Glasgow - is fraught with danger.

"There are no rematch clauses, no options, it is a free shot at the world title for Gonzelez," Hearn said.

"He is undefeated and he believes he can win this fight, that's why he is here and he poses a real threat.

"These kids from Puerto Rico are tough, they have a hard upbringing and they make it the hard way. This guy has a shot at millions of dollars so you know what he is going to do.

"It is only human nature he will put everything on the line and that makes him really dangerous. So Ricky knows he is in for a real fight."
