Olympic champion Luke Campbell has joined Matchroom and will make his professional debut in Hull in July.

The 25-year-old claimed gold in the bantamweight division in London last year, and is likely to start out in the paid ranks around super-featherweight.

Campbell is also a former European amateur champion and world championship silver medallist.

He joins a number of big-names boxers, including Carl Froch, Kell Brook, George Groves and Ricky Burns at the powerful Matchroom stable.

Campbell goes pro

"Every step of the amateurs was a stepping stone for when I turned professional, and I've done it for one reason and that's to be world champion," he told Sky Sports.

"I've got a lot of hard work ahead of me but I'm committed. It was a difficult decision because I've been part of Team GB for 12 years and I know nothing else.

"But this is a new chapter and I can't wait for the journey to start. I'm the most successful amateur in British history so it's good to learn that experience and take it into the professional ranks."

Such is Campbell's popularity, promoter Eddie Hearn believes he has the potential to become as a big a star as Ricky Hatton.

"Luke and I have had a number of discussions over the last few weeks and everything has been very positive," said Hearn. "He's taken his time, but he's impressed me with his determination and popularity in Hull, the likes of which I've never seen in any city since the likes of Ricky Hatton.

"We are going to grow Luke Campbell all over the country but the journey will begin on July 6 or 13 in Hull with a huge outdoor event.

"We are talking to the KC Stadium and Craven Park and the KC is the favoured choice, but they do have the problem of re-laying the pitch.

"Having been to Hull and seen the response from the community I'm not sure we're going to have a venue big enough. The bill will be built up around Luke Campbell, and it looks like Kell Brook will make his return to action on the same show.

The bill will also feature a fight for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title between Derry Mathews and Tommy Coyle.

Mathews fought for the belt last month when his battle with Anthony Crolla in Liverpool was deemed a draw.
