Lee Purdy: Four successive wins since losing on points to Colin Lynes
Lee Purdy has landed a surprise shot at Devon Alexander's world welterweight title.
Purdy has benefited from Matchroom stablemate Kell Brook's latest withdrawal and will challenge for the IBF belt in Atlantic City on May 18.
That was the third date set aside for Brook to take on the champion, but the unbeaten Sheffield fighter's foot injury has forced a third postponement.
And Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn announced Purdy's chance on Twitter, saying: "It's a funny old game how things play out.
"Lee Purdy will challenge Devon Alexander for the IBF world title on May 18 in Atlantic City.
"Kell Brook will remain No 1 mandatory challenger with the IBF. Who fancies Purdy v Brook in September for the IBF strap!?"
Purdy has rebuilt his reputation with four wins by stoppage in the 13 months since Colin Lynes handed him a third professional defeat.
But the Colchester fighter, who also has 20 victories and a draw on his record, is certain to start as a huge underdog in New Jersey.
