Alexander Povetkin: Will take no chances ahead of a potential Klitschko fight
Alexander Povetkin is poised to face unheralded Pole Andrej Wawrzyk in a warm-up fight ahead of a meeting with Wladimir Klitschko later this year.
Undisputed heavyweight champion Klitschko has been ordered to defend his WBA title against the sanctioning body's 'regular' champion Povetkin by the end of August.
And while that fight has still not been signed off both Klitschko, who takes on Francesco Pianeta next month, and Povetkin are keeping busy in the meantime.
Povetkin has been held back by training and managerial issues that have prevented him fighting anyone of note in a 25-0 career to date.
His latest victory against a shot Hasim Rahman marked a new low in the heavyweight division while a previous defence against cruiserweight champion Marco Huck saw the Russian earn a fortunate verdict.
And his team is unlikely to take any chances so close to a potential money-spinner with Klitschko, Wawrzyk (27-0) virtually unheard of outside his native Poland.
Contracts have still to be signed but the fight is expected to take place in Russia on May 17.
