Gavin Rees: Goes into his fight with Broner with nothing to lose

Sky Bet

Eddie Hearn believes Gavin Rees has nothing to lose by being pitched in at the deep end with WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner.

The 23-year-old American is being touted as the 'next big thing' across the pond but promoter Hearn expects only good to come from taking the fight.

"To make him the price they have made him is ridiculous," said Hearn, reflecting on bookies' odds of 12-1 and upwards.

"He's British, European and world champion, tough as old boots, a smart fighter. Of course he's up against it but he's fighting for the WBC title on HBO, of course it's not going to be easy.

"But I'm excited and I think he's going to do alright. Gav took the fight in an instant.

"I told him it was Broner on HBO and he said yes, 100 percent without hesitation. He thinks he can beat him, I'm realistic enough to know he's an outsider, but I think he's got a great chance, I really do.

"He's fearless, he doesn't care. He's difficult to hit, and I think his lack of size might help him. He's got a good jab and good head movement and I think he's going to be elusive."

Broner looked good taking the title from Antonio DeMarco in his last fight but the Mexican was the perfect opponent for Broner.

"DeMarco just stood in front of him but I think Gav will get the tactics right," Hearn added.

"It's a no risk fight. So what if he loses on HBO having put up a good account of himself. You go out to win and you take these big fights when they come."
