Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has 'agreed terms' with Golden Boy for Gavin Rees to take on WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner.
The fight, which is set to take place in Atlantic City on February 16, was confirmed by Hearn on Twitter after rumours started circulating.
"Hounded by questions about Rees v Broner.. We have agreed terms with Golden Boy for Feb 16," tweeted Hearn.
"Delighted for @gavtherock he deserves this massive shot. February is going to be some month on @skysportsboxing!"
The Welshman - who briefly held the WBA light-welterweight title in 2008 - had been promised a title shot by the promoter after the British and European belts were discarded.
A big domestic clash with John Murray was supposed to take place in December but Murray had to pull out after failing a medical.
It means Rees has not been in action since July when he came on strong to stop Derry Mathews in the ninth round.
Should the fight with Broner take place - contracts have still to be signed - it will mean frustration for WBO champion Ricky Burns, who had been touted as a possible opponent for the American.
Broner is 25-0 with 21 knockouts and won the WBC title on his first outing at 135lb after out-growing the super-featherweight division, where he was WBO champion.
The fight is scheduled to place a week before Sheffield's Kell Brook takes on IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander in Detroit.
