Joan Guzman: Suffered hand and knee injuries in a technical loss at the weekend

Former two-weight world champion Joan Guzman lost his unbeaten record when he was stopped on a technical loss by Khabib Allakhverdiev.

The Russian, who also entered the WBA light-welterweight title fight with a clean slate, was narrowly ahead on two of the three cards when the clash was stopped in the eighth round following a tangle of legs.

As the pair were prized apart it was clear the Dominican was unable to continue and the judges deemed he was behind at that point.

It was subsequently revealed that Guzman had suffered a double fracture to the left hand as well as a serious fracture of the knee that is likely to require surgery.

It could be end of the road for the 36-year-old, who failed to secure a career-defining fight during a stellar period in which he held the WBO super-bantam and super-featherweight titles.

However, brittle hands and the ability to gain weight between fights meant he never quite fulfilled his immense potential.

At one point he was on course to clash with then-WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison, but the fight never materialised.

He is likely to seek a rematch with Allakhverdiev, however the upwardly-mobile Russian could have moved on to better things by the time Guzman has regained full fitness.
