Paul Malignaggi claims he would have beaten Ricky Hatton had the Mancunian come through his comeback against Vyacheslav Senchenko.
Hatton beat Malignaggi when they last fought in 2008 but the New Yorker says he would have won had he not decided to change trainer earlier in the year.
And he was confident of avenging that loss even before seeing Hatton's hopes crushed by Senchenko - the man Malignaggi beat to win the WBA strap - at the weekend.
Malignaggi vs Hatton II was all-but made for next spring but that fight will not now take place.
"Hatton really started to believe the hype and said 'oh Malignaggi knocked him out, imagine what I'll do to him,' Malignaggi told BoxingScene.com.
"I have no doubt that I would have beaten Ricky Hatton. I should have beaten him in 2008, but now I have to live with that.
"But I know, and no matter what anybody tells me, I was better than Ricky Hatton. And that kind of burns me, but now I have to live with that. But it is what it is."
Malignaggi is still recovering from a broken thumb suffered in his recent victory over Pablo Cesar Cano, and will not be fit enough to fight before the spring.
