Fred Evans says his desire to be part of the World Series of Boxing outweighed the lure of turning pro.

The Olympic silver medallist will be the biggest name in the GB Lionhearts line-up which makes its home debut in the event at Celtic Manor on Friday November 23.

Evans earned rave reviews for his performances in London, beating world champion Taras Shelestyuk to reach the final before falling to Kazakh Serik Sapiyev, who was later voted boxer of the tournament.

He was courted by promoters but was eager to sign up for the global tournament, where performances are heavily incentivised.

"I spoke to a few professional promoters but the World Series of Boxing seemed the best way forward for me," he said.

"It is a monthly wage plus bonuses and the experience of fighting some of the best boxers in the world.

"Obviously the next Olympics in Rio is a long way off so it is too early to commit myself to anything like that. But I have no need to rush into anything and for now the World Series of Boxing is an excellent opportunity."
