Rocky Fielding won the vacant English super-middleweight title with a fifth-round stoppage victory over Carl Dilks.

Fielding, headlining Prizefighter night at the Olympia in his first title bout, came good after a sluggish start against his fellow Liverpudlian.

The 25-year-old, himself a former Prizefighter champion, sought to establish the jab early on and although he looked quite open journeyman Dilks was unable to capitalise.

Dilks had some success in the second but his left hook leads left him open to a counter and Fielding was quickly onto him, forcing him to hold on.

Fielding impressed with his accuracy but his shots often lacked venom and Dilks was quite happy to walk him down in a bid to make the younger man think twice about unloading.

But as the fight wore on Fielding landed with increasing regularity, Dilks not seeing the short right hook which rocked him in the fourth session - a round that nevertheless saw Fielding docked a point for holding on.

Trainer Oliver Harrison was never happy with Fielding at any stage and finally the youngster showed more intent in the fifth, with an early uppercut seeming to disconcert Dilks.

Fielding started to smother his opponent with blows and another sweet uppercut stopped Dilks in his tracks before a right cross put him down for the first time.

It was clear Dilks was on borrowed time and the end came mercifully swiftly, the right hand causing more damage and leaving Dilks in no position to beat a second count.

"It was a big test, I didn't think he was that tough," Fielding told Sky Sports. "He came at from the first bell and put it on me.

"First few rounds I was a bit sluggish but I found my range and I learned loads from that."
