Argenis Mendez (L): Set for rematch with Juan Carlos Salgado
Argenis Mendez is back on track for a title shot against IBF super-featherweight champion Juan Carlos Salgado after defeating Martin Honorio by unanimous decision.
The Dominican fighter produced a dominant display to defeat his Mexican opponent by scores of 117-109, 116-110 and 115-111 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Mendez made a fast start and opened up a comfortable lead on the scorecards in the early stages, with Honorio, who was deducted two points over the course of the fight, managing to win some rounds as the contest wore on.
Mendez defeated Honorio via a narrower points decision in May 2010 but this time left the crowd at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in no doubt as to who was the deserving winner.
The 26-year-old has now claimed two straight wins since his narrow points defeat to Salgado, who he is now expected to face in a rematch with the title on the line.
On the undercard, Mendez' countryman Joan Guzman remained busy with a first-round demolition of an over-matched Jorge Pimentel.
Guzman, a former WBO super-bantam and super-featherweight title holder, is now operating at light-welterweight and remains unbeaten in 35 contests.
