The mouth-watering clash between Scott Quigg and Rendall Munroe in Manchester was called off in the third round following a clash of heads.
The fight was delicately poised with both enjoying a measure of success in the opening two sessions before Munroe suffered a terrible cut above the right eye.
With blood obscuring the Leicester man's vision, the doctor had little choice but to call it off with the fight officially a technical draw.
Munroe had started brightly, landing two solid right hooks in the opening round as the younger Quigg settled into defensive mode in their interim WBA super-bantamweight title fight.
But the second belonged to the younger man, who frustrated Munroe by keeping out of range while landing quality shots of his own.
The third was less than a minute old when Quigg appeared to punch Munroe's head into his own with a right hook as Munroe let one go of his own.
The former world title challenger winced in pain and it was a few seconds before the blood started to flow and the severity of the injury became clear.
"Life's life, that's how it goes. We are two warriors, we are in the game expecting to get war wounds and that's how it's gone," Munroe told Sky Sports.
"I haven't seen the cut but I can see the grimaces on people's faces."
Promoter Ricky Hatton said: "It was shaping up nicely - sick isn't the word. It has to be a re-match but Rendall needs to let that heal."
