George Groves has been named the Boxing Writers' Young Fighter of the Year.

The 23-year-old from Hammersmith produced one of the upsets of 2012 when he out-pointed bitter rival James DeGale to become British Super-Middleweight champion in May.

He began the year as Commonwealth champion and also stopped Daniel Alottey in four in a March tune-up for the DeGale bout.

Groves will defend both his belts against Paul Smith in November but had already done enough to pip heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury in the voting.

"I'm chuffed to have been voted young boxer of the year," he said.

"There are a lot of talented fighters in the UK at the moment and to just be considered for this fantastic award is great.

"I thank everyone who has voted for me and my team who have helped guide me through a testing year."

The award caps a busy time for Groves, who has recently signed a promotional deal with Frank Warren - becoming a stablemate of DeGale.

The award will be presented at the Boxing Writers' Award Dinner in central London in October.
