Sam Webb overcame a nasty cut and Anthony Small to claim the British light-middleweight title at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham.

Having beaten the same opponent twice in the amateurs, Webb (15-1) maintained his dominance over his opponent with a gutsy points victory.

The 28-year-old took a majority decision on the judges' scorecards, getting the nod 117-113 and 117-112 from two of them with the third scoring it even, 115-115.

Webb's success was even more impressive considering he had suffered a gash above his right eye after a clash of heads in the fifth round.

Inspection

The injury survived an inspection from the doctor in the sixth after Small had piled on the pressure looking to finish the bout with a knockout.

However the champion - who had looked the sharper of the two in the opening exchanges without ever really dominating - took his foot off the gas.

In contrast Webb, fearing the injury may lead to the bout being stopped, took control despite having to deal with blood flowing into his eye. He landed a sharp upper cut in the ninth as he pushed forward impressively.

"I managed to dig deep and pull it out - I'm over the moon, over the moon," he told Sky Sports afterwards.

Webb also insisted he held no grudge against Small, who came into the ring in an all-white suit and top hat, following a confrontation at the weigh-in.

"There was a bit of panto beforehand, a bit of banter for the cameras. But there's no hard feeling at the end of the day, it is a sport after all," he added.
