So much can change in a week of sporting action and, sure enough, there have been numerous highs and deflating lows over the past seven days.
Nairo Quintana
Nairo Quintana became the first Colombian winner of the
Giro d'Italia thanks to an excellent display of climbing.
The 24-year-old Movistar rider took the lead of the race by climbing to victory on stage 16's summit finish at Val Martello and put the maglia rosa out of the reach of his rivals by triumphing on stage 19's mountain time trial on Cima Grappa.
He then safely negotiated the final stage into Trieste, finishing just behind the peloton to seal a 2min 58sec triumph over runner-up and fellow Colombian Rigoberto Uran, with Italy's Fabio Aru claiming the last place on the podium.
Quintana, who also topped the best young rider classification, said: "It is very difficult to explain how much happiness is inside me. It's one of the happiest days of my life. Thanks to my family, thanks to my team and thanks to all the Colombians. It is fantastic that this dream has come true."
Hideki Matsuyama
The Japanese star
snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in a dramatic win in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.
He looked to have blown victory in regulation by going double bogey-bogey at 16 and 17 in his final round.
But the 22-year-old gave himself a lifeline by forcing a play-off with a superb birdie at the closing hole to match Kevin Na's clubhouse total of 13-under.
And after Na had found water off the tee when the duo returned to 18, Matsuyama finally closed out his first PGA Tour win with a brave par after a brilliant up and down from left of the green after his approach had struck a spectator on the knee.
England football team
England eased to a
3-0 victory over Peru at Wembley in their final warm-up match on home soil before the World Cup in Brazil.
Roy Hodgson started the match with what could well be his XI for the opening World Cup Group D match against Italy in Manaus on June 14, with captain Steven Gerrard at the base of the midfield which also included Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson.
Adam Lallana and Danny Welbeck provided an additional attacking threat alongside Wayne Rooney, with Daniel Sturridge the focal point for Hodgson's line-up, while the defensive unit was the anticipated five of Joe Hart, Glen Johnson, Phil Jagielka, Gary Cahill and Leighton Baines.
Sturridge's superb first-half strike opened the scoring with central defensive duo Cahill and Jagielka converting corners from left-back Baines in quick succession midway through the second period.
Peru caused concerns for England at the back, with Hart called upon to make a couple of smart saves and Jagielka also producing one excellent last-ditch challenge after an error from right-back Johnson.
Hodgson's team next play friendlies against Ecuador and Honduras this week to hone their tactics before the World Cup action gets underway.

Southampton
The Premier League side suffered the blow of losing manager
Mauricio Pochettino to Tottenham and striker Rickie Lambert to Liverpool, which is also a possible destination for midfielder Adam Lallana.
Pochettino signed a five-year contact with Spurs after guiding the Saints to their highest-ever Premier League finish of eighth place last season.
The Argentinean has taken his entire back-room staff to White Hart Lane, with Jesus Perez (assistant head coach), Miguel D'Agostino (first team coach) and Toni Jimenez (goalkeeping coach) all following him to north London.
In a further blow, Liverpool have signed lifelong Reds' fan
Lambert, who was born in Kirkby and was part of the youth team at Anfield before being released at 15.
The centre-forward, who is in England's squad for this summer's World Cup, scored 14 times last season for the Saints and moves for a fee believed to be around £4m.
And Liverpool are also looking to sign
Lallana, with the Reds understood to have made an improved £25m bid for the Southampton midfielder, according to Sky sources.

England slumped to a
seven-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the fourth ODI at Lord's despite Jos Buttler's amazing century.
After being set 301 for victory, Buttler smashed 121 off 74 balls to give England hope of pulling off their highest ever run chase in a home one-day international.
Needing 12 from the last over to take victory, Lasith Malinga produced a superb yorker which led to Buttler's run out and conceded just four runs as the tourists levelled the series at 2-2 to ensure a decider at Edgbaston on Tuesday.
Kumar Sangakkara (112) had earlier powered Sri Lanka to 300-9, largely in partnership with Tillakaratne Dilshan (71).
Leeds Rhinos
The Rhinos were knocked off the top of the Super League by St Helens following a
24-6 defeat to in-form Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
Chris Bridge bagged 16 points during his man-of-the-match display as the Wolves completely outplayed the Rhinos, who could not contain the home side's speed around the ruck.
Leeds boss Brian McDermott admitted his troops had come off second best.
"We were well beat. It was not good. We've got a few things we need to address there," said McDermott, who also questioned his players' attitude towards the start of the game.
"That's more concerning than actually what we did during the game. We can cut and edit that and make it look bad but I don't think across the board we were terrible. Our attitude wasn't great though and that's more worrying."
Serena Williams
World No 1 and defending champion
Serena Williams lost in the second round of the French Open, beaten 6-2 6-2 by Spain's Garbine Muguruza.
The 17-times grand slam champion never got into her stride against the 20-year-old world No 35, making 29 unforced errors and hitting only eight winners.
Top seed Williams had not been knocked out of a major before the fourth round since losing in the first round of the 2012 French Open.
The early exits of Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska left the women's draw without a top three seed in the fourth round for the first time at a Grand Slam tournament in the Open era.
While in the men's draw,
Roger Federer failed to reach the quarter-finals at Roland Garros for the first time in 10 years after being beaten 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 4-6 6-3 by Ernests Gulbis.
British hope
Andy Murray progressed to the last 16 after battling to a 3-6 6-3 6-3 4-6 12-10 victory against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
