Jack Bateson picked up the flyweight silver medal after a close bout with Scotland's Reece McFadden in the final of the Tammer Tournament in Finland on Sunday.

The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist was awarded the fight on all three judges scorecards, although the bout was far closer than that suggests.

Bateson knew he was going to be in for a tough test against an opponent who had seen off his fellow GB team-mates Andrew Selby and Charlie Edwards on his way to the semi-finals in Glasgow during the summer, and so it proved as McFadden was judged to have edged a cagey encounter.

On route to the final Bateson saw off Belgium's Dodji Ayigah in the last eight before recording a unanimous points win over Yuttapong Tongdee of Thailand in the semi-final.

Although disappointed not to come away with the top prize, the Sky Academy Sports Scholar took to Twitter to give his views on the fight and express his desire to do what is necessary to come out on top next time.

"Lost in a cagey final to Scotland, stuck to the tactics and thought we had the fight won. Scores didn't reflect the fight, well done Reece," he wrote.
