Ubaldo Jimenez racked up 13 strikeouts
Ubaldo Jimenez racked up 13 strikeouts to send the Cleveland Indians into the post-season with a 5-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.
Jimenez hurled 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball, while Nick Swisher homered and drove in a pair to help the Indians extend their winning run to 10 and book the first of the two American League wildcard spots.
Cleveland will have to wait to find out who their wildcard opponents are, though, after the Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas Rangers both won on the final day of the regular season.
Tampa Bay won first, jumping into a seven-run lead against Toronto, before holding on to win a nail-biter 7-6 as the Blue Jays rallied. Jose Lobaton highlighted a six-run first with a two-run double, but Mark DeRosa followed suit in the sixth to begin a comeback which fell just short.
That put the pressure on Texas, but they came through by beating the Los Angeles Angels 6-2. Geovany Soto had two hits, a go-ahead RBI double and a long ball, while Adrian Beltre also homered.
The pair will play off in Texas on Monday, with the winners going on to the wildcard game against the Indians for the right to face the Boston Red Sox in the American League Divisional Series.
The Red Sox lost 7-6 to the Baltimore Orioles, while there were mixed fortunes for the AL's other two play-off teams.
The Oakland Athletics were 9-0 winners over the Seattle Mariners, with Sonny Gray throwing five scoreless innings, while the Detroit Tigers were on the wrong end of a no-hitter from Henderson Alvarez in a 1-0 loss to the Miami Marlins.
Alvarez struck out four, walked one and hit a batter, and the win was only confirmed when Giancarlo Stanton scored on a wild pitch in the ninth.
The St Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 4-0 to seal the top seeding in the National League. Joe Kelly hurled 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his 10th win of the season, while Jon Jay had a run and an RBI on two hits.
The Cardinals finished one game clear of the Atlanta Braves, who crushed the Philadelphia Phillies 12-5.
Gerald Laird had four hits and Elliot Johnson drove in five runs for the Braves, who will go on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers while the Cards take on the winners of the NL wildcard game.
Jordy Mercer hit an inside-the-park home run as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 to complete a series sweep over the opponents they will face once again in Tuesday's wildcard game.
The Dodgers, meanwhile, lost 2-1 to Colorado in Todd Helton's final game for the Rockies.
Elsewhere on the final day of the regular season, there were wins for the New York Mets, the Kansas City Royals, the New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres.
