The Detroit Tigers saw their eight-match winning streak come to an end as they slumped to a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Houston Astros.
The Astros had lost five games on the trot heading into the match but upset the odds as Dallas Keuchel pitched a season-high seven 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, six hits and zero walks while striking out seven. George Springer also scored his first career home run in the win, with Carlos Corporan and Matt Dominguez adding further homers for the victors at Comerica Park.
Despite the loss, the Tigers still have control of the American League Central as their nearest challengers the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals both also lost.
The White Sox were humbled 12-5 by local rivals the Cubs, for whom Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro contributed two-run homers and rookie Mike Olt struck his first career grand slam to help their side snap a four-game losing streak.
Kansas City, meanwhile, were beaten 1-0 by the Seattle Mariners thanks to Corey Hart's RBI single in the third.
National League West leaders the San Francisco Giants got back to winning ways following their loss to Pittsburgh with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, while the East division's top team Miami made it five wins on the trot with a 3-1 home triumph over San Diego.
Also, AL East pacesetters Baltimore beat struggling Tampa Bay 3-1, Edwin Encarnacion scored his 200th and 201st career home runs as Toronto saw off the Phillies 12-6, the Texas Rangers thumped the Colorado Rockies 5-0, while the Cleveland Indians defeated the Minnesota Twins 9-4.
