James Ellington, Adam Gemili and Delano Williams all negotiated their way through the 200m heats at the World Championships in Moscow.

Gemili smashed his personal best as he won his heat in 20.17 secs, despite the 19-year-old having previously been seen as a 100m specialist.

Ellington also won his heat, with the 27-year-old finishing in 20.55. He said: "I am glad, I got the job done."

Williams secured his place in the semi-finals with a second-placed finish, with the Turks and Caicos Islands born teenager coming home behind Usain Bolt in 20.72.

Tiffany Porter looked very smooth in winning her 100m hurdles heat in 12.72 to cruise into Saturday's semi-finals.

The 25-year-old said: "It was just a matter of working off the cobwebs and just focusing on running a clean race and qualifying.

"The main focus this whole season has been here, the World Championships, so hopefully I can put my races together and come out victorious."

World and Olympic champion Sally Pearson put her injury issues behind her as she won her heat in a season's best 12.62.

The British women's 4x400m put their late reshuffle behind them as they comfortably won their heat.

With Perri Shakes-Drayton ruled out, Eilidh Child, Shana Cox, Margaret Adeoye and Christine Ohuruogu combined brilliantly to finish in 3:25.39.
