News broke at around 4pm on Sunday afternoon as the British Athletics Championships came to a close, that the world's fastest man this year, Tyson Gay, and former 100m world record holder Asafa Powell had both failed drugs tests.
Campbell, who formed part of Britain's most successful relay winning team that struck gold in the 4x100m at the Athens Olympics, said the news was devastating.
"The news broke around 4pm and everyone was totally destroyed," he told Sky Sports.
"We'd just witness fantastic athletics, it really took the shine off the weekend and James Dasaolu running 9.91 seconds.
Damaging
"It's extremely damaging. You never want to line up next to someone who is cheating."
Campbell praised Dasaolu for his sub-10 clocking in Saturday's 100m semi-finals, ranking him the second fastest Brit of all time, behind Linford Christie.
"I didn't expect that so early," he added. "It was a masterful performance and I hope he takes that confidence into the World Championships.
"He's a genuine medal contender."
