Katarina Johnson-Thompson has withdrawn from the Great Britain team for the European Championships in Zurich, which start on Tuesday.

The heptathlon star, 21, was only due to take part in the long jump competition in Switzerland but is still not fully recovered from the foot problem that ruled her out of the Commonwealth Games.

British Athletics said in a statement that "taking the longer-term view rather than short-term risk" would ensure her winter training programme was not compromised.

The Liverpool athlete had been enjoying a superb season until injury struck, and she would have been a medal contender in her favourite event in Zurich as well as favourite for gold in Glasgow.

There are other changes to the team with long jumper Shara Proctor joining Johnson-Thompson on the sidelines with a thigh injury she suffered in the Glasgow final.

Philips Idowu is out of the triple jump as he is unhappy with his form and wants to focus on training, while Sebastian Rodger replaces a similarly below-par Dai Greene in the 400 metres hurdles.

But Mo Farah, who pulled out of the Commonwealth Games through illness, remains on course to compete in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres.

British Athletics have also confirmed javelin thrower Goldie Sayers will captain the team.

"Having had a fairly nightmarish past 18 months - and not knowing whether I'd ever throw or compete again - getting back into the GB vest alone has been incredible. To say captaincy is an added bonus, is a massive understatement," the 32-year-old said.

British Athletics performance director Neil Black said: "I was delighted to offer Goldie this captaincy. She has a career that has spanned both junior and senior ranks that sets a real example to the youngsters making that transition."
