Mark Sanchez: Could return this season despite being placed on injured reserve
New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has been placed on short-term injured reserve after suffering a torn labrum in his shoulder.
Although being put on injured reserve usually means a player's season is over, the short-term listing allows the 26-year-old to return after eight weeks.
Sanchez suffered the injury during a pre-season contest, with the Jets initially stating they would not put him on IR before ultimately doing so.
Each team is allowed to bring back one player from IR each season and the Jets' decision to tab Sanchez for a recall hints that he may still be an important part of their plans.
Geno Smith has opened the season as the starting quarterback but has only thrown for 470 passing yards, one touchdown and four interceptions in his first two games.
In other injury news, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh says he is "optimistic" that star running back Ray Rice will not miss significant time after suffering a hip flexor strain against the Cleveland Browns.
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Malcom Floyd was stretchered off the field against the Philadelphia Eagles after being given a scary blow to the neck.
There was no official update on Floyd's status but it has been reported that he was able to join his team-mates on their flight back from Philadelphia.
