San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has signed a six-year contract extension that reportedly includes record guaranteed money.

The 49ers did not reveal the financial aspects of the deal, which ties him to the franchise until 2020, but earlier reports hinted that it would pay him as much as $126m, $61m of that in guaranteed money.

Kaepernick has come a long way since taking over from Alex Smith as the team's starting quarterback in the second half of the 2012 season.

He has played in 32 games, 23 of them starts, and completed 382 of his 639 passing attempts for 5,046 yards and 31 touchdowns.

A dual threat with excellent speed, Kaepernick has also rushed for 937 yards at an average of six yards per carry, scoring a further nine touchdowns on the ground.

"Colin's hard work and dedication have played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization," said 49ers general manager Trent Baalke.

"His work ethic, leadership and on-field production have positively influenced our team, and we look forward to his continued growth in all areas.

"Our organization always looks to reward our players for their contributions and commitment to the team. Colin's agents, Scott Smith and Jason Bernstein, along with Paraag Marathe and Brian Hampton, should be commended for working diligently to reach an agreement."
