The Seattle Seahawks have handed a contract extension to Earl Thomas, making him the highest paid safety in the NFL.

A three-time Pro Bowler already at the age of 24, Thomas helped the Seahawks to Super Bowl glory last season as part of a strong defence that was given the nickname 'The Legion of Boom'.

"I always said bad stuff always lit my fire. But this is one good thing that really boosted me and added fuel to that fire. And I needed this, this is great."

Terms were not made official, but it has been reported that the first round pick from the 2010 draft has received a four-year deal worth $40 million.

He had one year still remaining on his rookie contract but Seattle have moved swiftly to make sure one of their prized assets is now signed up until the end of the 2018 campaign.

"I'm just excited for the future," Thomas told the team's official website. "I always said bad stuff always lit my fire. But this is one good thing that really boosted me and added fuel to that fire. And I needed this, this is great.

"The only way this will change me is that I will work even harder than I ever worked before, trying to reach that unlimited potential I always talk about.

"It's like faith. It's something that you really can't see. But I know my potential as a football player is not even close to where it needs to be. There's no ceiling."

Thomas has started 64 consecutive regular-season games and all seven of the Seahawks' post-season games since joining them, the last of them being a 43-8 demolition of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.
