The Baltimore Ravens have begun their off-season planning by agreeing a restructured contract with linebacker Terrell Suggs that hands them more salary cap space to play with.

The six-time Pro Bowler is the longest-serving player on the Ravens roster, and after losing so many veterans following their Super Bowl win last year they were keen to keep his presence in the team.

31-year-old Suggs struggled down the stretch last season and was due $12.4 million this year - but the team informed him he would not return on those terms, while for his part Suggs was open to discussing a restructured contract.

Having signed a fresh four-year contract, 12-year veteran Suggs will now probably see out his NFL career as a Raven, with the deal suiting both parties.

"I'm truly flattered and honored that I get to be Raven for life," Suggs said as the deal was announced.

The Former defensive player of the year still led the team with ten sacks last season, and has a team record 94.5 to his name, to go along with 667 tackles, 27 forced fumbles and seven interceptions.

"I think I was probably trying to do too much," he said of his late-season drop-off in production. "As one game went by and two games went by, it was like, 'I need to get a sack, I need to get a sack.' I stopped letting the game come to me."

Suggs will now continue his partnership with Elvis Dumervil as the team's first choice pass rushers, but with both over 30 they will be looking to inject some new blood through the Draft.

A swift resolution to their most pressing off-season issue also allows the Ravens to move on to other matters, with tight end Dennis Pitta and offensive tackle Eugene Munroe the two most pressing priorities.
