Seattle Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith was shocked to hear he had been named Super Bowl's MVP following his side's 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos.

Smith became just the third linebacker in 48 years to win the accolade - with the 24-year-old emulating the achievements of Chuck Howley (Dallas Cowboys, 1971) and Ray Lewis (Baltimore Ravens, 2001).

Smith went a long way to receiving the award when he intercepted Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and raced 69 yards to score, while he also recovered a fumble and made five tackles.

And despite an impressive display, Smith was still surprised to win the award.

"I always imagined myself making great plays but I never thought about being the MVP," he said.

"I was just happy to be on the field."

Pressure

The Seahawks were already in control at 15-0 up when Smith snaffled Manning's stray pass and returned it for crucial touchdown.

"I guess we had good coverage on the back end. Peyton kind of scanned the opposite side of the field and was working his way back," Smith said.

"We had excellent pressure, somebody got the their arm on the ball, I didn't see who.

"I guess the ball came out high and I was just fortunate that the running back was kind of sitting there waiting on it and I just attacked it and took off."
