Houston have announced that Bill O'Brien has been appointed as new head coach of the Texans.

O'Brien has been head coach at Penn State University for the last two years after he replaced Joe Paterno, and Penn State have now installed defensive line coach Larry Johnson as interim coach following O'Brien's departure.

O'Brien now faces a huge task to revive the Texans, who had the worst regular-season record in the NFL with just two wins in 16 games.

Houston won their opening two fixtures before losing the next 14, leading to the sacking of Gary Kubiak.

O'Brien has previous experience in the NFL, spending five years as an offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick.

He led the Penn State Nittany Lions to two winning seasons as the university recovered from the infamous sex scandal that led to them being banned from competing in any college bowls.

O'Brien is believed to have signed a five-year contract with the Texans following talks during the week.
