Hayden Smith: Back in rugby union after stint in NFL
Hayden Smith has rejoined Saracens after failing to carve out a career in the NFL.
The second-rower signed for the New York Jets 18 months ago and made six appearances in the NFL as a tight end.
But the Australian-born lock was released by the Jets in August, and Saracens have confirmed that he has re-signed for the Aviva Premiership club.
Smith spent four years with Sarries and scored one try in 45 appearances for the first team before departing for the United States, where he had trials with Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington and New Orleans before being snapped up by the Jets.
"It's fantastic to be back," said the 28-year-old. "I learned a huge amount in the NFL, various elements that will help me become a better rugby player.
"But there is nothing like the Saracens environment and I am now completely focussed on working hard and helping the squad achieve all our goals."
Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall added: "Hayden is a phenomenal athlete with huge potential, and it's great to have him back in the fold."
