Drew Brees completed 30-of-42 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns as the Saints moved to 10-3.
The Panthers had gone into the game on the back of an eight-game winning streak, while they had not conceded more than two touchdowns in a match all season.
However Brees seemingly unpicked them at will, with three of the touchdowns coming during a sensational second period for the Saints.
The Panthers had led 6-0 after the first quarter, with Graham Gano landing field goals from 45 and 24 yards.
However by half-time the Saints were 21-6 up with Brees linking up with Marques Colston - who made 125 yards from nine receptions - for the first two touchdowns.
Brees connected the 30-year-old wide receiver from six and 15 yards before tossing a five-yard scoring pass to Jimmy Graham.
Garrett Hartley landed a 19-yard field goal before Brees and Graham combined from eight yards to put the result beyond doubt.
The Panthers finally had something to cheer about when Cam Newton, who had been sacked five times, threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Steve Smith with 5:15 remaining.
