Tim Tebow: surplus to requirements in New England
Just days before the new season, Tim Tebow's NFL career was again thrown into uncertainty as he was released by the New England Patriots.
Tebow was let go by a team for the third time in 18 months, as he did not survive the final raft of cuts teams make to settle on their final 53-man squads for the upcoming season.
Coach Bill Belichick has Ryan Mallett firmly settled as back-up to Tom Brady and Tebow failed to make enough of an impression during pre-season to earn a spot amongst the ranks.
"I would like to thank Mr Kraft, coach Belichick, coach McDaniels and the entire Patriots organization for giving me the opportunity to be a part of such a classy organization," Tebow said on Twitter. "I will remain in relentless pursuit of continuing my lifelong dream of being an NFL quarterback."
It's another blow for the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner who has gone from college superstar to unemployed after a spell with Denver which included a play-off win and a bizarre stay with the Jets when he languished behind mark Sanchez.
Belichick brought in Tebow in June and the thought was he could use his versatility to play at QB, full-back, running back and even as a receiver or tight end.
Tebow was exclusively used under centre during pre-season though, but his displays were not enough and yet again one of the most talked about players in the NFL has a huge cloud hanging over his career.
It's all a far cry from just over a year and a half ago when Tebow threw for 316 yards including a thrilling game-winning touchdown in a play-off victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers and their league-leading defence.
Normally for a player to fall so far from grace takes either a big injury or some off-field indiscretions, but Tebow has been the model professional both on and off the field, but continued concern over his throwing action has seemingly been his undoing.
Now, once again, the question of whether the two-time national champion with Florida can actually carve out a career in the NFL will be amongst the main headlines in the NFL.
