The Washington Redskins brought in a couple of experienced wide receivers as they welcomed back Donte Stallworth and also picked up Devery Henderson.

32-year-old Stallworth played for the Redskins back in 2011 but left to play for the New England Patriots last season - where he played sparingly and made just one reception, albeit a 63-yard touchdown.

Both men will offer experienced assistance to quarterback Roger Griffin III, who is stepping up his rehab from injury, and back-up Kirk Cousins who could start the season if Griffin's knee is not ready.

Stallworth is a former first round pick for the New Orleans Saints has played for six teams over his decade in the NFL, catching 35 touchdown passes and amassing 4,837 receiving yards.

Stallworth has had an eventful career off the field as well, being suspended for the entire 2009 season after spending 30 days in jail following a DUI manslaughter conviction.

His life almost took an even worse turn in March when he and his girlfriend ended up in hospital electrocuted and burned after a hot air balloon they were in hit power lines - so Stallworth is relieved to be back in the NFL for more than one reason.

Return

"It was obviously really good being back out here. Not only being back out here playing football again, running around, but it's a great organization, great fan base and this is the area to be in," Stallworth said. "I'm thankful for the opportunity, just trying to make the most of it.

"It's been a long road for me for the past year and a half. Just glad to be back out here."

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan admitted that he did not want to lose Stallworth to New England last season, so was glad to have him back in the fold.

"I didn't want to lose Donte a year ago. Before he had signed, he was contemplating what to do and he had decided to go to New England," Shanahan said.

"I really thought that he made a mistake. I thought he would have been better being with us just because I liked what he did, what he brought to the table."

31-year-old Henderson will add further experience to the roster after spending nine seasons with the Saints following them drafting him out of LSU in 2004.

Henderson played 124 games for the Saints with 4,377 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns, but was only used in a minor role last season.
