Green Bay have confirmed that Clay Matthews has signed a long-term extension to his contract.

The Packers did not disclose terms of the deal, but Matthews is believed to have signed a five-year contract worth around $66m which makes him the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL.

Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy said: "Congratulations to Clay, who has quickly developed into a core member of our team.

"His accomplishments and the example he sets on and off the field will be vital to our continued success. We look forward to the rest of his Packers career."

Matthews is also reported to have received a $20.5m signing bonus while taking his annual salary to $13m per year.

The 26-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft and has quickly established himself as one of the premier linebackers in the league.

The All Pro has posted 42.5 sacks in 55 starts, including 13.5 during the Packers' successful Super Bowl season in 2010, while he is also a reliable run-stopper in an inconsistent defence.

Meanwhile, Green Bay are poised to announce a new contract for Aaron Rodgers this week which is widely expected to make the star quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history.
