Trestman steps up to a top role in the NFL for the first time, having been with the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes for the last five seasons.
He led the Alouettes to two Grey Cup titles after moving north on the back of a lengthy career in a variety of sideline roles in the NFL.
Trestman was an offensive coordinator with San Francisco, Arizona and Oakland and also spent time with Minnesota, Tampa Bay and Detroit where he coached running backs and quarterbacks.
He beat off competition from Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and the Indianapolis Colts' Bruce Arians for the role.
The Bears hope he can get the most out of quarterback Jay Cutler and help them reach the playoffs on a consistent basis - they missed out this season on the final day when Minnesota beat Green Bay to secure the final wildcard place.
