Tony Sparano has been sacked as offensive co-ordinator of the New York Jets, head coach Rex Ryan has announced.

Former Miami boss Sparano spent only one season as OC under Ryan, but the Jets finished a disappointing campaign with one of the worst offensive records in the NFL.

"At the end of the day, I wanted to move this team in a different direction offensively," said Ryan, whose team missed out on the play-offs with a 6-10 regular-season record.

Defensive co-ordinator Mike Pettine is now out of contract, and he is expected to interview for a similar role with Buffalo in the off-season.

"I hope Pettine doesn't take the Bills job," added Ryan, who also revealed that quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh would not be renewing his contract.
